DBT or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is nowadays prevalent everywhere and the research keeps claiming that it is an effective treatment for many mental health problems. Therapists, treatment providers and people keep seeking the DBT for curing severe and deteriorating emotional and behavioral issues. The research seems to be promising to state that apart from medication management, DBT continues to be an effective treatment for depression.
DBT has evolved into a theory by experts working with suicidal women who were engaged in self sabotaging behaviors. The treatment for Understanding Dialectical Behavior was firstly approached with treatment from a stringent cognitive behavioral perspective. But as the time went by, it was found that the cognitive behavioral techniques are not that effective. Some may have improved with those techniques, but there were many who responded to treatment with anger or withdrawal. Then the experts adapted their work to establish a treatment method that helped in changing problem behaviors and offered the acceptance and validation that it would eliminate anger and enhanced the treatment retention. The outcome was a combination of behavioral and crisis intervention strategies and focusing more on acceptance and tolerance.
Nowadays, DBT is deemed a cognitive behavioral and acceptance oriented therapy being practiced as a comprehensive intervention package as a whole focusing on eliminating high risk and treatment affecting behaviors.
The emphasis of the DBT model is to enlighten the person to:
- Regulate the extreme emotions and eliminate negative behaviors that are caused by the emotions and trusting their own instincts, emotions, and activities.
- These very goals are accomplished with the help of multiple treatment models like individual therapy, skills training, structuring the environment, coaching and consultation teams for providers.
A big part of DBT treatment is aligned more to the teaching skills. The skills are made for moderating the emotions and behaviors categorized into four categories:
- To increase the interpersonal effectiveness in conflict
- To regulate painful emotions
- To tolerate emotional stress
- Mindfulness skills for experiencing emotion
In every group, particular skills are presented and practiced and assignments are given as homework for the week. The gist of teaching DBT is to improve the skill generation in daily life. People learn skills in group for resolving crisis in a productive way. Coaching in crisis is also an important part of the treatment. People can access therapists on phone for interaction on application of skills.
